Veterinary professionals are invited to attend our annual symposium October 10-12, 2025 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage. The AKVMA has a long and rich history of providing top notch continuing education in an inviting atmosphere of collegiality.

Click the schedule tab above to browse our agenda. Some of the sessions are designated as general (suitable for veterinarians and veterinary support staff) and other sessions are specific to veterinarians or veterinary technicians.
All sessions are approved by the Alaska Board of Veterinary Examiners and each attendee may earn up to 20 hours of continuing education. Please refer to the schedule for the number of CE hours approved per session.

Ashley Bourgeois

Dr. Ashley Bourgeois is a board-certified veterinary dermatologist passionate about providing practical knowledge to general practitioners to help itchy pets! She completed her bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. She then completed a one-year small animal internship at Purdue University. Upon finishing her internship, she accepted a residency position with the Animal Dermatology Clinic’s Tustin, California location in 2011. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 2014. Dr. Bourgeois moved to Portland, Oregon in 2016 to help expand the company. She is an owner within the company and on the board of directors. She has a strong interest in autoimmune skin diseases, allergies, cytology, and otology. In her leisure, Dr. Bourgeois enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, and watching sports. She and her husband stay busy with their daughter, son, and rescue Lab/Boxer/Pit mix. Dr. Bourgeois is passionate about educating veterinarians in dermatology and work/life integration through her podcast, lecturing, and social media presence (The Derm Vet).

Dr. William Saxon received his DVM from Iowa State University in 1986. He completed his internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City and residencies at the AMC and the University of Pennsylvania. He practices in Washington, D.C. He has been an IDEXX Reference Laboratories internal medicine consultant since 1997. Dr. Saxon is a coauthor of Manual of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and has authored articles on cardiomyopathy, acute abdomen disease, drug toxicities and burn injury.

A native of Alabama, Dr. Hulon graduated from Auburn University with both her undergraduate degree and her D.V.M.    She has practiced in Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama in a variety of areas during her career, including small animal practice (associate and owner), relief vet, shelter medicine, Department Chair for a Veterinary Technology Program, and as a Technical Service Veterinarian for Hill’s Pet Nutrition.  Since 2011, Dr. Hulon has been a Regional Consulting Veterinarian for Elanco Animal Health. Her current role is the Wellbeing Consulting Veterinarian, where her personal experiences and professional passion focus on subjects related to wellbeing within the veterinary profession.   She is focused on delivering information that promotes wellbeing to the veterinary profession nationally and internationally. Subjects in which Dr. Hulon has certification are FRANK Communication Skills, Insights Discovery, Compassion Fatigue, Positive Psychology, QPR Suicide Training, Fear Free, the Human Animal Bond, Mental Health First Aid and Canine Colors. Dr. Hulon is very involved in organized veterinary medicine.  She is a Past President of the Kentucky VMA and served for 2 years as Secretary/ Treasurer.  She was President of the Greater Louisville VMA for 11 years.  She was a member of the Alumni Advisory Council for Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for 8 years and served on the Foundation Board for the Louisville Zoo for 16 years as the Chairperson for the Conservation, Education and Collections Committee.  Currently, she is involved with the Alabama VMA, serving on the Wellbeing Committee and is a member of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Group.  Dr. Hulon teaches the Wellbeing Elective at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Heidi lives in Auburn, AL with her parakeets, Aurea and Bo.  She has 2 grown sons, Spencer and Evan of whom she is extremely proud.  When not working, she can be found on the tennis court or attending an Auburn event. J  War Eagle!
